It is essential that the tree should be FRESH. The needles should not be dull and dried up and the branches should not be brittle. The outer needles should not fall off if the tree is gently shaken.
The tree should be kept outside in a cool place, preferably standing in water until it is required indoors.
Before bringing in the tree, cut one inch off the butt and mount it in a water holding stand or wedge it in a bucket of pebbles. When brought inside, keep the container topped up with water and you will be surprised how much your tree drinks. This procedure will minimize needle drop.
Few people bring flowers into a heated house and keep them out of water but a surprising number never think of giving their Christmas tree a drink.
